Session 08 Comedic and character-driven with building menace

Narrative Recap

The session opened on a freeze-frame at the Starwater River crossing, moments after the plesiosaur had been pacified and Grimm's crew had fled. With Captain Stout marching down the bank, the crew scrambled to manage the aftermath: Vaela attempted to teach the plesiosaur to show its flipper in exchange for a pickle (and failed spectacularly on a nat one), Skrit wept openly against the creature's hide while finishing his healing of it, and Sanji quietly sabotaged the brass control whistle before it could be handed over as evidence. Stout collected the modified whistle, locked it in her strongbox, and paid the party 100 gold as promised. After investigation of the ambush site turned up slaughterhouse offal barrels — bearing, as Stout's guard confirmed on a second look, the same tally-mark-and-antlers brand found on the plesiosaur (an imprint of the same mark was also on the control whistle) — along with resin-dipped crossbow bolts and an order slip sealed in yellow wax marked with a 'V', the party successfully coaxed the creature downstream to a deep pool using pickle jars, clearing the crossing. Stout noted the brand and filed her report, and the 30 stalled merchant wagons finally began crossing.

The Greasy Spoon was guided to the best stall in the Thornwall Fords market square, and the crew ran a successful dinner service to a town that hadn't eaten well in days. Gorlog cooked to high praise — a passing merchant noted a 'Suzail fold on that garnish' — while Skrit picked up Sanji's slack after she abandoned her runner duties mid-service to chase a lead on the king. That lead took her to a frantic royal clerk named Maurice, whom she convinced she was an excellent shopper on a 19 deception check. Maurice handed her a sealed shopping list for the king's autumn hunting camp and five gold to acquire the items by sundown. Meanwhile, Skrit received a note in Draconic from an anonymous kobold directing him to a warren near the next town east, with the message: 'the tall folk don't go there, but we remember our own.' Wicket, manning the cash box and watching the crowd, overheard whispers that everything the Vances move on this river 'sleeps a night at the old Redwater Mill.'

Midway through service, two bounty hunters — Callum and Petra — worked their way around the square showing a charcoal sketch of Vaela to every stall. Wicket spotted them early, and Vaela used her last third-level spell to magically disguise herself, transforming into a stout dwarven woman with a beard and a raspy voice who immediately introduced herself as 'Lydia.' Callum and Petra reached the Greasy Spoon, declined the sliders (mostly), and made clear they were hired by the Mirethanes — confirmed to be Vaela's parents — to retrieve their daughter unharmed. Wicket brokered a potential trade: he moved to hire the pair to track down the two fugitives from the river crossing (no killing — just word of where they headed and whether they're up to more trouble), and Callum named their price: the party tells them what they know about Vaela and her current whereabouts. The negotiation was left open, with Callum and Petra promising to find the party at their own convenience.

As the dinner rush wound down, a cloaked figure approached the window, ordered turnip mash without intent to eat, placed a bloodied folded note on the counter, and melted back into the crowd. Wicket recognized him as one of the guards from Splinter's Bend. The note read: 'We know what you did in Waymoot. Your road ends at the Ford.' Ledger closed the session with a cold narration: a good day, by any measure — paid by the Kingsguard, cheered by a town, and a pickle order written onto the king's own manifest. But the note nobody wanted was already on the counter. Supper's coming, and supper's a meal where the knives come out.

Player Decisions

Sanji Kait

Sabotaged the control whistle before handing it over to Captain Stout as evidence.

Captain Stout requested all items taken from the river as evidence. Sanji did not want the whistle used to control the plesiosaur again.

Consequence

The whistle was handed over in a modified state. Stout did not detect the sabotage. Whether the modification actually prevents the whistle from functioning is unknown.

Wicket Carson

Handed the whistle over to Captain Stout after Skrit objected.

Stout requested the whistle as evidence and explained it would be locked in the strongbox and sent with her report to superiors.

Consequence

Stout locked the whistle as evidence. The party is no longer in possession of it, though it has been covertly modified.

Vaela Faith

Used her last third-level spell to magically disguise herself as a dwarven woman named 'Lydia', altering her appearance and voice.

Wicket warned Vaela that two bounty hunters were working through the market square showing a charcoal sketch of her.

Consequence

Callum and Petra appeared not to recognize her immediately, though they seemed suspicious. Vaela is now out of third-level spells.

Wicket Carson

Opened negotiations with Callum and Petra to hire them to track down the two river fugitives; the hunters' asking price was that the party tell them what they know about Vaela and her whereabouts.

Callum and Petra approached the Greasy Spoon stall showing Vaela's sketch and revealed they were hired by the Mirethanes.

Consequence

Callum and Petra agreed to consider the service trade and promised to find the party on their own. Vaela's location and identity are not yet confirmed to the hunters, but the deal as proposed would require disclosing what the party knows about her.

Sanji Kait

Abandoned her runner duties mid-dinner service to chase a lead on the king at the salt stall.

A market patron told her to speak to the royal purveyor's clerk by the salt stall if she wanted to find the king.

Consequence

Skrit covered her dereliction, preserving the dinner service outcome. Sanji successfully met Maurice and obtained the king's shopping list.

Sanji Kait

Deceived Maurice into believing she was an excellent and capable shopper who could help him fulfill the king's supply list.

Maurice was frantic, ink-stained, and in a hurry to complete the king's purchases before the market got too busy.

Consequence

Maurice gave Sanji a crown-sealed copy of a partial supply list and five gold, with instructions to meet him at the East Gate by sundown.

Vaela Faith

Threw a full jar of pickles downriver to coax the plesiosaur away from the crossing.

The plesiosaur was still stationed near the crossing after the fight, blocking merchant wagons from crossing.

Consequence

The plesiosaur followed the pickles downstream, clearing the crossing for wagon traffic, but settled in a deep pool 100 yards south rather than departing entirely.

Memorable Quotes

Ledger: 'Tonight's episode, we get paid, we get famous, and we find out exactly how much both of those cost.'
Sanji (to Captain Stout, from across the river): 'I think they're probably in the belly.'
Ledger: 'Supper's coming, and supper's a meal where the knives come out.'

Cliffhangers

  • A bloodied note left by a Splinter's Bend guard reads 'We know what you did in Waymoot. Your road ends at the Ford.' — a direct Vance threat at the party's current location.
  • Callum and Petra — bounty hunters hired by the Mirethanes — have not been paid off or dealt with, and promised to find the party on their own terms.
  • Sanji must deliver the king's shopping list items to Maurice at the East Gate by sundown.
  • The sabotaged whistle is now locked in Stout's strongbox as evidence — whether it actually prevents the whistle from functioning is unresolved.
  • The plesiosaur remains in the deep pool 100 yards from the crossing and has not departed; Grimm and his surviving crossbowman are still at large and could attempt to recapture it.
  • Vaela's Disguise Self will expire in approximately one hour and she has no remaining third-level spell slots.
  • Skrit has received directions to a kobold warren — 'the tall folk don't go there, but we remember our own' — from a mysterious anonymous kobold.

Plot Threads This Session

advanced Fugitives from Splinter's Bend

A Splinter's Bend guard appeared at the Greasy Spoon window, left a bloodied note reading 'We know what you did in Waymoot. Your road ends at the Ford.' The Vance organization is aware of the party's location and has made a direct threat.

advanced The Starwater Plesiosaur Blockade

Plesiosaur coaxed downstream to a deep pool, clearing the crossing. Stout locked the sabotaged control whistle as evidence. Offal barrels at the ambush site bore the same tally-mark-and-antlers brand as the plesiosaur's brand, linking the operation to an organized group. Stout's recon guard returned with an order slip bearing a broken yellow wax seal marked with what looks like a 'V', reading: 'Hold the ford through market week. Feed it. Don't spend it. Coin follows the tally.' He also collected resin-dipped crossbow bolts from the ambush site. The control whistle itself bears a small imprint of the same tally mark and antlers. Grimm and his surviving crossbowman are still at large.

advanced Vaela's Book and Mythical Creatures

Vaela documented the plesiosaur as her first confirmed proof against her mother's book on mythical creatures, earning advantage on future checks involving aquatic creatures. A patron at the Greasy Spoon recognized the book as a Mirethane first edition. When Vaela's hand brushed her mother's marginal notes, her hair flickered and she heard a voice say 'I'm home.'

advanced Vaela Joins the Crew

Vaela's parents, the Mirethanes, have hired the bounty hunters Callum and Petra to return her unharmed. Vaela used her last third-level spell to disguise herself as a dwarven woman named 'Lydia' to avoid detection. Wicket opened negotiations with Callum and Petra: the hunters would track down the two river fugitives, and in return the party would tell them what they know about Vaela and her whereabouts. The negotiation is unresolved and the hunters promised to find the party on their own.

advanced The Mirethanes Upriver

The Mirethanes confirmed to be Vaela's parents, currently on a research expedition upriver. A patron at the Greasy Spoon mentioned the authors might be just up the river on a research study. Callum and Petra are working on their behalf.

advanced Sanji's Quest for the King

Sanji was told by a market patron to speak to the royal clerk at the salt stall. She found the clerk Maurice and, through a 19 deception check, convinced him she was a capable shopper. Maurice revealed the king hunts the King's Forest in autumn on an unannounced circuit, never the same lodge twice. Sanji is now holding a crown-sealed shopping list and five gold to acquire supplies for the king's camp by sundown.

advanced Silas and the Logging Town

Wicket overheard market gossip connecting the Vances to the Old Redwater Mill as an overnight waypoint for goods moving on the river. Old Man Vance's Mountain Toll Road was also mentioned in whispers.

resolved Appointment to Thornwall Fords

The party completed the task Captain Stout assigned — clearing the plesiosaur blockade — and received 100 gold, a prime market stall, and passage across the river. Harold's letter of introduction was honored.

advanced Gilded Ladle Audit / Pendergast

No direct development, but the Greasy Spoon's dinner service was a public success in a major market, increasing the party's visibility and reputation.
