Narrative Recap
Session 11 opened with the party leveling up to 5th level, with Vaela notably gaining access to Fireball. Ledger delivered the cold-open narration from the wagon, tallying the night's arithmetic: five stalls burned, one dead raider under canvas, four in irons, one missing guardsman (Corporal Tam Brannick), a whistle not where the law believed it to be, and a third raft that went upriver in the dark carrying something — or someone — it didn't arrive with. When Captain Stout arrived to take stock, Wickett returned the stolen evidence from Toby's pockets, claiming it as everything recovered — save the whistle, which he kept concealed. Stout, believing the whistle lost or headed upriver, accepted this. Skrit watched Wickett's every move with visible intensity but said nothing to Stout.
The prisoners were questioned on the riverbank. Under intimidation from Sanji and an accidental burning from Vaela (whose natural heat scalded the middle prisoner while she shook him), the raiders revealed they were dock workers at the mill upriver — loading and unloading crates they are never allowed to look inside — who had been drafted into escorting the dead man downriver. One prisoner, looking at the faceless body, identified him: Tobias Grimm, the animal handler at the mill — and Vaela's insight connected Grimm to the figure in the bushes across the river who hurt Pickles during the blockade fight. The middle prisoner, shaken (and unwittingly burned) by Vaela, named Kreel as the foreman of the mill who gives all the orders, and the prisoners confirmed that the third raft was the one Kreel followed back upriver. Stout offered the party use of the captured raft and a river-crossing raft if they would go upriver to retrieve Corporal Brannick, advising that 20 men work at the mill for pay, and one works for fear — 'mind that one.' Wickett apologized for implying Brannick might be a traitor, and the guards visibly relaxed.
Back at the inn, Skrit demanded the whistle from Wickett once they were alone — 'It's Wickett's turn to trust Skrit' — and immediately beat it flat with his meat tenderizer, bending it beyond any repair. He carried the flattened whistle back to the riverbank, where Vaela asked him for it and melted it into oblivion on the gravel in front of Pickles — deliberately not over the water — so the plesiosaur could watch her chains cease to exist. On the way out of the inn, Benjamin the desk clerk presented an itemized invoice (window egress fee, emotional distress to the desk staff, smoke-stained linens), which Wickett settled with two gold on the Fire Marshal's behalf, and Thaddeus the bartender quietly tipped off Wickett that two cloaked men had watched the market square from the window table at dusk the night before, ordering small beers they never touched and leaving no tip; Wickett searched near the table and found an empty vial bearing the tally-mark brand. Meanwhile, Gorlog was presented with a hastily sewn purple sash naming him Fire Warden — a title the table promptly settled as 'Fire Marshal' — of Thornwall Fords, gave another rousing speech to scattered chants of 'Gorlog for office,' and never took the sash off again. A woman named Mother Halda — the Speak with Animals caster the party had been hunting for while shopping in an earlier session — appeared at the wagon, was won over by Gorlog's Eggs Benjamin, and cast the spell to translate a conversation with Pickles.
Pickles confirmed the Starwater River is her home and communicated that she had been deliberately avoiding the mill upriver because that is where the ropes are. She conveyed that other animals at the mill were in similar circumstances to her own, and that when she is in that part of the river, she cannot think clearly. She also communicated, with some satisfaction, that Tobias Grimm — the animal handler — had been tasty. When Vaela promised Pickles that the party was going to destroy the ropes and free the animals, Halda relayed the answer: Pickles is in — she can pull the raft, forever. The session closed with the party loading onto two rafts — the wagon on one, Gorlog and Ledger on the other — after pointedly refusing to rope or harness Pickles ('we are not her keepers or her jailers'); Pickles grabbed each raft's dangling tow rope in her mouth of her own accord and began pulling them upriver in the late morning. Ledger delivered the closing narration — two rafts, a wagon, a badger, and a theory, heading up the same dark water all their trouble came down — and every time he'd done the arithmetic on this outfit, it was the other fellows who came up short. Next episode: everything's upstream.
Player Decisions
Returned the stolen evidence to Stout but concealed the whistle, deceiving her into believing everything had been recovered.
Stout was taking stock of the morning's losses and believed her evidence had gone upriver. Wickett had secretly recovered both whistle and evidence from Toby's body.
Stout accepted the story (Wickett rolled 17 and then 20 on deception). She now believes the whistle is lost or upriver. Skrit subsequently acquired and destroyed the whistle.
Obtained the whistle from Wickett and immediately destroyed it by beating it flat with his meat tenderizer.
Skrit had openly objected to keeping the whistle since it was recovered. Once alone with Wickett at the inn, he demanded it and destroyed it.
The whistle was bent beyond repair. Skrit carried the flattened remains back to the riverbank intending to melt them down; Vaela then asked him for it and finished the job. The control mechanism for Pickles no longer exists.
Handed over the whistle to Skrit.
Skrit pressed him for it when they were alone, invoking trust. Wickett said he didn't think it was worth destroying but complied.
Skrit immediately destroyed it. Wickett's objection was noted but overridden.
Paid Benjamin two gold pieces — significantly more than the itemized invoice — on behalf of the Fire Marshal of Thornwall Fords.
Benjamin presented fees for window egress, emotional distress, and linen smoke damage.
Benjamin accepted and the party remains welcome at the Thornwall Inn.
Apologized to Stout for implying Corporal Brannick might be a traitor.
Wickett had asked whether Brannick could be in cahoots with the Vance operation. Seven guards reacted with visible hostility.
The guards relaxed. Stout's guards gave Wickett a small nod of acceptance.
Accepted the Fire Marshal of Thornwall Ford sash and gave another rousing speech, then refused to remove the sash.
Grateful townspeople presented the sash after Gorlog led the bucket brigade and gave inspirational speeches the night before.
The sash became a permanent fixture on Gorlog's person for the session. The crowd was further endeared to him.
Initiated physical interrogation of the middle prisoner by gripping both his shoulders and shaking him while demanding information about Pickles.
The prisoners were being evasive. Vaela was distressed about Pickles and not thinking about her natural heat.
Accidentally burned the prisoner. Rolled an 18 on intimidation. He revealed Kreel's name and role as mill foreman. Stout and her guards were visibly shocked.
Asked Skrit for the flattened whistle and melted it into oblivion on the riverbank gravel, in front of Pickles.
Vaela had promised Pickles, through Mother Halda's translation, that the party would destroy the ropes and the whistle and free the animals. She melted it over the gravel deliberately, not over the water.
Pickles watched her chains cease to exist — 'no more chains for Pickles.' Pickles committed to the mission and later pulled the party's rafts upriver of her own accord.
Refused to rope or harness Pickles for the raft journey — 'we said no ropes. We are not her keepers or her jailers.'
Someone suggested having Pickles pull the rafts; doing it with ropes would have echoed exactly what the mill did to her.
After Animal Handling rolls (Vaela 14, Sanji 22), Pickles grabbed each raft's dangling tow rope in her mouth voluntarily and pulled the party upriver unharnessed.
Suggested to Pickles via Mother Halda's translation to stay away from people, particularly upriver.
The party wanted to warn Pickles about danger from the mill workers.
Pickles communicated she already planned to avoid the mill men. Revealed information about ropes, other captive animals, and her inability to think clearly near the mill.
Accepted Stout's request to go upriver and retrieve Corporal Brannick, taking two rafts and setting off mid-morning.
Stout offered the use of the rafts and shared her intelligence about the mill in exchange for the party's help.
The party departed upriver with Pickles pulling both rafts. The mill — and Kreel — are now their destination.

Memorable Quotes
Ledger: 'Every crew I've ever heard of, when it comes time to go up a river, went and get themselves a boat. My crew got two rafts, a wagon, a badger, and a theory.'
Skrit (to Wickett, alone at the inn): 'I trusted you when you said give it to Stout. And I trusted you when you said don't shoot that man. It's Wickett's turn to trust Skrit.'
Ledger, asked how he feels about boarding a raft, gives a shrug the party swears meant: 'We've done dumber shit.'
Ledger (cold open): 'Three take away two leaves one. And that one went home in the dark, sitting low in the water, carrying something it didn't arrive with. Someone, I ought to say, I guess.'
Cliffhangers
- The party is traveling upriver toward the mill on two rafts pulled by Pickles — a full evening and into the morning by river, per Stout — and open questions were left for next session: whether to long rest en route and whether they might overtake Kreel's raft, which is only a few hours ahead.
- Kreel, the mill foreman, departed upriver on the third raft hours before the party — he has a head start and is presumably returning to the mill with Corporal Brannick and possibly other cargo.
- The mill holds other captive animals in circumstances similar to Pickles's, and something there prevents Pickles from thinking clearly.
- Two cloaked watchers were at the inn at dusk the previous evening; an empty tally-mark-branded vial was left at their table.
- One person at the mill works for fear, not pay — Stout's cryptic warning about this individual was not elaborated on.
- Stout's knuckle is bandaged, and the DM noted on the record that the reason has not been explained yet.
Plot Threads This Session
Corporal Tam Brannick confirmed missing, believed hauled upriver on the third raft. Stout has asked the party to retrieve him. The party has accepted and departed upriver.
Wickett returned the stolen documents to Stout, withholding only the whistle. Stout does not know the whistle was recovered. Skrit subsequently obtained the whistle from Wickett and destroyed it. The whistle is gone.
Prisoners identified the dead raider as Tobias Grimm, the mill's animal handler and the man giving the raiders their orders, and named Kreel as the mill foreman above him. The third raft is confirmed as the one Kreel followed back upriver — believed to be carrying Corporal Brannick. The mill's tie to the Vances was confirmed by Stout 'as far as we can tell.'
Pickles communicated via Speak with Animals that the mill is where the ropes are, that she cannot think clearly in that part of the river, and that other animals are held there. She voluntarily joined the party's upriver mission, pulling their rafts without being harnessed.
Pickles communicated that other animals at the mill are in circumstances similar to her own. Mother Halda declared herself in on the mission to free them. The nature and number of animals is unknown.
Named for the first time this session by a prisoner. Identified as the foreman giving orders at the mill. Was on the third raft returning upriver. Stout described one person at the mill who works for fear — possibly Kreel. Prisoners visibly reacted with alarm at his name being spoken.
Thaddeus revealed that two cloaked men watched the market square from the inn window at dusk the previous evening. Wickett found an empty tally-mark-branded vial at their table. Their identities and purpose are unknown.
Gorlog received the Fire Marshal of Thornwall Ford sash from grateful townspeople. Continued serving breakfast to half the town. The sash has become a character fixture.
The whistle no longer exists. Skrit obtained it from Wickett at the inn and beat it flat with his meat tenderizer, bending it beyond repair (the DM noted it was never physically magical — Sanji had only bent its tone); back at the riverbank, Vaela asked Skrit for the flattened whistle and melted it into oblivion on the gravel in front of Pickles. Stout believes it was lost, eaten, or taken upriver.
