Session 07 Comedic and chaotic in the first half (Vaela's int

Narrative Recap

Session 7 opened with the Greasy Spoon wagon camped for the night just off the King's Road, half a day west of Thornwall Fords. As the crew settled in around the campfire, a new traveler came stumbling out of the woods — Vaela, a Fire Genasi Sorcerer whose hair blazes with living flame. Her arrival was immediately chaotic: Skrit, believing her to be on fire, charged her and attempted to smother the flames with his cloak, burning through it in the process, while Sanji doused them both with a pitcher of questionable water she had grabbed from Gorlog. Wickett eventually restored some semblance of order, and after the group dried off and introductions were made, Vaela shared her mission: she is trying to prove her mother's scholarly book on mythical creatures wrong, believing many entries are either mistaken or deliberate lies. The crew welcomed her warmly, and she posed a question to the group around the campfire — whether mythical creatures are real. Wickett answered that since pocket dimensions exist, he saw no reason not to believe in mythical creatures. Vaela awarded the round's inspiration to Skrit, for his answer about leaving servitude under a dragon to prove kobolds can be good and the found family he has found with the crew. The evening was further interrupted by the arrival of Desmond 'The Gourmand' Cray, a refined bounty hunter in dark green leathers who had been listening from the treeline. He laid out the party's 500-gold bounty poster and offered them a deal: pass his culinary trivia challenge on a Blight-Kissed Truffle — identifying it, explaining its lethality, and describing its preparation — and he would burn the poster. With Ledger sniffing out a clue from the mud on Skrit's boots, Vaela's reference books providing the toxicology, and Sanji's monastic knowledge of poison-neutralization pointing Gorlog toward the correct preparation method, the crew succeeded on two of three checks. True to his word, Desmond handed the poster to Vaela who ignited it, then departed — but not before warning them that the Vance family's reach was extensive and that a Vance rafting party had been spotted just upriver.

The following morning, after a full long rest and a level-up to level 4, the crew broke camp and rolled east toward Thornwall Fords. Gorlog remained in the wagon as always, Sanji rode the roof, and Vaela perched on an iron skillet on the flat-top grill to avoid scorching the wood. Skrit quietly fed Ledger the aged tuna that had been riding in his pouch since before the last session. As they approached the Starwater River crossing at Thornwall Fords, they found a blockade: 30 merchant wagons backed up at the Kingsguard gate, the river barge tied fast, and the ford impassable. Captain Cynthia Stout, a Shield Dwarf and commander of the local Kingsguard, was holding back the irate merchants. Gorlog and Wickett approached with their letter of introduction from Harold, and Captain Stout — recognizing Harold's seal as legitimate — explained the problem: a massive Starwater Plesiosaur had taken up residence in the gravel beds, already killing two guards and smashing three rafts. She offered the crew free passage, coffers, and the best vendor spot in Thornwall Fords' market square if they could clear the blockade. As they walked back along the line of waiting merchants, Gorlog and Wickett separately overheard merchants talking about a pair of scholars — the Mirethanes — who had passed upriver about a week ago on a raft loaded with books, apparently searching for old ruins.

With combat initiated, the situation quickly became more complicated than a simple monster encounter. A crossbow bolt from the treeline missed Skrit before initiative was even formally declared, and a second bolt from a separate hidden shooter followed. It became clear that the Plesiosaur was not acting freely: Sanji spotted it reacting to a low whistle coming from the direction of a figure later identified as Grimm, a beast-handler, who was controlling it with a brass whistle. The crew fought on two fronts simultaneously — engaging two hidden crossbowmen in the brush while attempting to subdue rather than kill the distressed Plesiosaur. Vaela landed a nat-20 Chromatic Orb for 20 fire damage on one of the two crossbowmen (Number 7), badly wounding but not killing him; Skrit called out with Draconic Cry and later landed a critical Divine Smite on the plesiosaur for 33 damage in a single blow; Wickett finished off the wounded crossbowman (Number 7) with a critical short-bow shot, while the second crossbowman (Number 8) kept up crossbow fire from the bank; and Sanji made a spectacular Focus Step of the Wind leap across the river, ramming Grimm in the midsection and causing him to cough up the brass whistle, which Sanji then recovered from the water with a lucky check. With the whistle gone, the Plesiosaur stopped straining against its conditioning. Skrit, feeling genuine remorse, used 10 points of Lay on Hands to heal the creature, and it responded peacefully. Grimm disengaged and fled back into the woods, and the surviving crossbowman (Number 8) took the dash action and fled down the road after him. Session ended with the immediate combat threat resolved — the first crossbowman dead, the second crossbowman and Grimm escaped — and the crossing still technically blocked pending cleanup.

Player Decisions

Skrit Kyle

Charged Vaela to try to smother what he believed were dangerous flames with his cloak

Vaela emerged from the woods, hair blazing, and Skrit assumed she was on fire and in danger

Consequence

His cloak was destroyed (reduced to a scarf-strip of charred fabric), he took 3 points of fire damage, and Vaela was startled and terrified before the misunderstanding was resolved

Sanji Kait

Doused Skrit and Vaela with a pitcher of water (grabbed from Gorlog's wagon stores) to put out Vaela's hair-flames

Skrit was wrapped in his burning cloak trying to smother Vaela; Gorlog rolled a D4 and the result was 2

Consequence

Vaela's hair flames were temporarily extinguished, causing visible emotional distress; the water was of questionable quality. (Gorlog supplied the water; Sanji threw it.)

Wickett Carson

Accepted Desmond Cray's culinary trivia challenge rather than attempting to fight or flee

Cray appeared at camp with the party's 500-gold bounty poster and offered to burn it if they could answer three questions about a Blight-Kissed Truffle

Consequence

The crew succeeded on two of three checks; Cray burned the poster as promised and departed with a warning about the Vance network

Sanji Kait

Attempted to persuade the Plesiosaur rather than attack it, and leaped across the river to ram Grimm

Sanji recognized the plesiosaur's distress and did not want to kill it; used Focus Step of the Wind to cross the river and charge Grimm

Consequence

Grimm coughed up the brass whistle; Sanji recovered it with a lucky sleight-of-hand roll; the plesiosaur was freed from Grimm's control

Skrit Kyle

Used 10 points of Lay on Hands to heal the Plesiosaur

The plesiosaur had stopped attacking and was whimpering after the whistle was recovered; Skrit felt genuine remorse for the damage the party had done to it

Consequence

The plesiosaur responded peacefully ('eee') and turned its attention to Vaela's pickles; combat effectively ended

Vaela Faith

Threw pickle jars toward the plesiosaur as a distraction during combat

The plesiosaur was being controlled by Grimm's whistle and was attacking the party; Vaela did not want to kill it

Consequence

The plesiosaur strained toward the pickles and eventually fixated on them after being freed from the whistle's control

Skrit Kyle

Attempted to shove an acid-sack grenade down the plesiosaur's throat while grappled in its mouth; reconsidered and instead used Draconic Cry

Skrit was grappled and restrained in the plesiosaur's jaws; wanted to do something dramatic

Consequence

Draconic Cry granted the whole party advantage on attack rolls for the next turn; he then threw the grenade at the plesiosaur's back instead, dealing 6 acid damage and freeing himself from the grapple range

Memorable Quotes

Ledger (voiceover): 'A warm fire in a dark woods is about the closest thing to an open invitation there is. Out here, you don't get to pick who comes wandering in off the road. You just find out who walks up and what they're hungry for.'
Desmond Cray: 'Silas Vance's food monopoly was a culinary crime against Cormyr. I want to see if the crew who broke it are genuine culinary artists or just lucky frauds. Prove your knowledge of the craft, and I'll burn this poster.'
Desmond Cray (departing): 'I should have just killed them. They're gonna get dead.'

Cliffhangers

  • Grimm, the beast-handler, escaped into the woods; who he works for is unknown to the party.
  • The Starwater River crossing is not yet formally cleared — Captain Stout's deal (coffers, vendor spot) has not been collected.
  • The brass whistle is now in Sanji's possession — its properties and implications are unexplored.
  • A pair of scholars, the Mirethanes, were spotted upriver about a week ago on a book-laden raft asking about old ruins.

Plot Threads This Session

opened Vaela Joins the Crew

Vaela, a Fire Genasi Sorcerer, stumbled onto the crew's campfire. After a chaotic introduction (a burned cloak and a pitcher of questionable water) she was welcomed in. She is traveling to prove her mother's book on mythical creatures wrong, and has said she ran from her parents and doesn't want to go back. By session end she was fully integrated into the combat and the crew was discussing her staying on.

advanced Fugitives from Splinter's Bend

The 500-gold bounty issued by Constable Barnaby Plum (backed by Vance money) reached Desmond Cray, a high-end bounty hunter. Cray chose not to collect after the crew passed his culinary challenge and burned the poster. He confirmed the posters are being disseminated widely and that 500 gold is far beyond Plum's personal means. Inside Thornwall Fords, Captain Stout has promised protection.

advanced The Starwater Plesiosaur Blockade

The river crossing at Thornwall Fords was blockaded by a massive plesiosaur. A beast-handler named Grimm was controlling it with a brass whistle, backed by two hidden crossbowmen. The crew realized the beast was being controlled, broke that control when Sanji rammed Grimm and recovered the whistle, and pacified the creature (Skrit healed it). One crossbowman was killed; Grimm and the other crossbowman escaped into the woods. Who orchestrated the blockade is not known to the party.

advanced Appointment to Thornwall Fords

Harold's letter of introduction was presented to Captain Stout and recognized as legitimate. The crew has been offered free passage through the gate, payment, and a prime vendor spot in the market square in exchange for clearing the plesiosaur blockade. The blockade is largely resolved but not formally concluded at session end.

advanced Sanji's Quest for the King

Sanji continued pressing for information about King Azoun IV's location. Desmond Cray deflected, saying royalty is no concern of his. The fastest confirmed route toward Suzail runs along the Starwater River, which the crew is now attempting to cross.

opened The Mirethanes Upriver

Gorlog and Wickett overheard merchants at Thornwall Fords discussing a pair of scholars, the Mirethanes, who were spotted traveling upriver on a book-laden raft about a week ago, asking about old ruins.

opened Vaela's Book and Mythical Creatures

Vaela introduced her personal quest: to prove her mother's scholarly book on mythical creatures is either wrong or deliberately misleading. She believes many creatures listed as myths are real. The plesiosaur encounter is directly relevant to this thread.
