Session 04 Comedic and chaotic with escalating stakes

Narrative Recap

The session opened with the party in the logging trench, having just survived the ankheg encounter from last session. One ankheg was dead, one unconscious and chained, and one had fled. Skrit investigated the burrow tunnel and, following a whiff of turnip mash, crawled deep into the hole and recovered a mud-and-mash mixture — circumstantial evidence suggesting Silas had been baiting the ankhegs into the trench. Gorlog confirmed the flavor, the party debated the significance, and ultimately decided to present the evidence to Foreman Kaelin alongside the meat. They loaded the unconscious ankheg onto the driver's bench between Skrit and Wickett, positioning it as if it were driving, and headed back toward Waymoot.

Their return was met with a cheer from the assembled townsfolk and a grimacing near-smile from Foreman Kaelin on his balcony. The celebration turned chaotic when Skrit, swept up in the excitement of the crowd's applause, shoved the unconscious ankheg off the bench — waking it. Sanji leapt off the wagon roof and knocked it unconscious again, but not before it terrified the town square. Kaelin was displeased. After Gorlog served the crowd ankheg po' boys to middling reception — a 9 on his performance roll — Sanji's enthusiastic vegetarian tirade made things actively worse, causing most loggers to stop eating. Silas appeared in the doorway of the Cupped Axe to heckle the party, calling Skrit a 'scale skin' and darkly warning that he had 'people coming.' Kaelin formally presented the Writ of Provisioning, declaring the party Waymoot blood and putting them nominally beyond the reach of Splinter's Bend law. Sanji's sharp eyes caught Silas passing a small wooden box to a rider who slipped out a side gate.

The party split. Gorlog and Wickett rode out with the logging crew and Kaelin, while Skrit and Sanji stayed in town. On the logging road, Gorlog and Wickett spoke with Harold, a Kingsguard posted to Waymoot as punishment for illegal gambling — a man with no love for Silas and a strong desire to return to his wife and three kids in Waterdeep. They planted the seed that solid evidence of Silas's sabotage might be enough to earn Harold a ticket home. Shortly after, the logging convoy was halted by Julian Pendergast, Senior Auditor for the Royal Order of the Gilded Ladle, who had set up a pristine white pavilion tent in the middle of the road to perform a field audit of the Greasy Spoon. A tense but ultimately successful skills challenge followed, with Wickett counterbalancing the damaged wagon wheel using the dead ankheg as ballast, Gorlog impressing Pendergast with plating and successfully explaining the aged tuna as a regional delicacy, and Wickett saving the day with a sleight-of-hand clean when a mud ball came flying through the serving window. Pendergast awarded the Greasy Spoon his Gilded Ladle seal of compliance.

Meanwhile, Skrit and Sanji broke into the Cupped Axe, found Silas's private office, smashed open a locked desk drawer with a crowbar and Sanji's back kick, and discovered a ledger recording payments to Constable Barnaby Plum to keep competing supply caravans out of Waymoot. They also recovered the missing aged tuna — hidden in Silas's desk — and noted three bottles labeled Splinter's Bend Reserve. The session ended on a split-screen cliffhanger: on the logging road, Silas's 'sous-thugs' dropped their disguises and leveled spears at the Greasy Spoon just as Pendergast awarded the Greasy Spoon his Gilded Ladle seal; back in town, Skrit and Sanji stood in a smashed-up dark office holding damning evidence.

Player Decisions

Wickett Carson

Made an insight check that redirected the investigation from the trench surface to the burrow interior

The party was searching the logging trench for evidence of ankheg baiting; Wickett's insight identified that any planted bait would be underground, not on the surface

Consequence

Directed Skrit to crawl into the burrow tunnel, where he found traces of turnip mash — the key evidence linking Silas to the infestation

Skrit Kyle

Crawled into the ankheg burrow tunnel to investigate for evidence of tampering

Wickett's insight check suggested any evidence of baiting would be underground, not topside

Consequence

Found traces of turnip mash in the burrow — circumstantial evidence linking Silas to the infestation

Skrit Kyle

Shoved the unconscious ankheg off the driver's bench when Kaelin praised the party to the town

Swept up in crowd excitement as Kaelin declared the party had cleared the trench

Consequence

The ankheg woke up, terrified the townsfolk, and damaged the party's reputation with Kaelin

Skrit Kyle

Fashioned an ankheg leg section into a pauldron for his armor

Field dressing the dead ankheg after the encounter

Consequence

Gained a cosmetic piece of armor; no confirmed mechanical benefit yet

Wickett Carson

Suggested splitting the party — Gorlog and Wickett ride out with the loggers; Skrit and Sanji stay in town

Wanted to get back to basics cooking-wise and pursue the Harold lead on the logging road

Consequence

Led to the Pendergast audit encounter on one side and the Cupped Axe break-in on the other, creating a split-screen cliffhanger

Wickett Carson

Used the dead ankheg on the wagon roof as a counterweight to stabilize the damaged wheel during the audit

Wickett noticed the damaged wagon wheel; the Gilded Ladle audit required the wagon to function while in motion

Consequence

Gave Gorlog advantage on the first audit performance check; wheel temporarily stabilized

Skrit Kyle

Pocketed the incriminating ledger found in Silas's locked desk drawer

Anticipating they might want to present it as evidence

Consequence

Party now holds documented proof of payments between Silas and Constable Barnaby Plum

Sanji Kait

Launched into a vegetarian tirade while Gorlog was serving ankheg po' boys

Honestly expressing her disgust with meat after describing how gross the bug meat looked

Consequence

Most loggers stopped eating; Gorlog's payment dropped from a potential 15 gold to a single gold piece

Sanji Kait

Broke into the Cupped Axe with Skrit and helped smash open the locked desk drawer

Skrit wanted to find evidence against Silas; Sanji accompanied him

Consequence

Found the incriminating ledger, the missing tuna, and three bottles of Splinter's Bend Reserve; now holding damning proof

Skrit Kyle

Left the money box with 75 gold pieces untouched in Silas's desk

Skrit stated he was not a thief when the money box was found

Consequence

Party took only the ledger and the tuna, maintaining moral distinction between evidence-gathering and theft

Memorable Quotes

Silas: 'You little scale skin. Don't think I've forgotten that dice game. Or how you tricked my boys into setting you down like a porcelain doll. I don't know how you did that. I got people coming. I got people coming who don't care how many holy light tricks you got up your sleeve.'
Kaelin: 'Look at them, half drowned in bug juice and still standing. Waymoot, these are the ones who cleared the trench. Tonight, we don't eat sawdust and desperation. Tonight, we feast on that which tried to feast on us!'
Pendergast: 'You would assault a gilded ladle contractor? This is high sanitation treason!'

Cliffhangers

  • Silas's disguised men have dropped their aprons and leveled spears at the Greasy Spoon on the logging road, with Gorlog and Wickett outnumbered
  • Skrit and Sanji are in Silas's smashed office holding the incriminating ledger and the recovered tuna, with Silas's whereabouts unknown
  • A rider was observed leaving Waymoot through a side gate carrying a small wooden box from Silas — destination and contents unknown
  • The damaged rear wheel of the Greasy Spoon was only temporarily stabilized and may fail under combat stress
  • Pendergast's true allegiance — genuine auditor or Silas's pawn — remains unclear

Plot Threads This Session

resolved Ankheg Infestation / Writ of Provisioning

The ankheg infestation was cleared: one dead, one dispatched by Thud in town, one fled. The Writ of Provisioning was formally presented by Foreman Kaelin, granting the Greasy Spoon official Waymoot contractor status and nominal protection from Splinter's Bend law.

advanced Silas and the Logging Town

The party found a ledger in Silas's desk confirming payments to Constable Barnaby Plum to block competing supply caravans from Waymoot. Skrit and Sanji have the ledger and the tuna. Silas publicly warned the party he has 'people coming' and was observed sending a rider with a wooden box out of town. At session end, Silas's disguised men attacked the Greasy Spoon on the logging road. Skrit and Sanji were in Silas's office holding damning evidence, with Silas's whereabouts unknown.

resolved The Missing Aged Tuna

The missing aged tuna was found in Silas's locked desk drawer, wrapped carefully. Skrit reclaimed it as the rightful property of the Greasy Spoon.

advanced Fugitives from Splinter's Bend

The Writ of Provisioning provides some protection — Kaelin declared the party 'Waymoot blood' and stated that anyone from Splinter's Bend would have to settle disputes with the Crown's logging guild. However, Silas warned he has 'people coming,' suggesting the Splinter's Bend threat is escalating. The rider sent with the wooden box may be carrying word to Splinter's Bend.

advanced Skrit Joins the Crew

Skrit took an increasingly proactive investigative role — investigating the burrow for evidence, finding the turnip mash, driving the plan to confront Silas, and breaking into the Cupped Axe. His reaction to being called 'scale skin' by Silas became a character beat.

advanced Sanji Joins the Crew

Her vegetarian tirade inadvertently sabotaged Gorlog's ankheg po' boy sales. She spotted Silas passing the wooden box to the rider — a potentially critical observation. She participated in breaking into the Cupped Axe and delivered the back kick that broke open Silas's locked desk drawer. She can read the incriminating ledger found inside.

opened Gilded Ladle Audit / Pendergast

Julian Pendergast, ostensibly a Senior Auditor for the Royal Order of the Gilded Ladle, appeared on the logging road and conducted a field audit. The Greasy Spoon passed. Whether Pendergast is genuinely an auditor, a pawn of Silas, or something else is unresolved. His 'assistants' were revealed to be Silas's men.
