Session 02 Comedic and warm, with genuine emotional beats

Narrative Recap

The session opened in the pre-dawn hours of a forest clearing, where the party had camped for the night with the Greasy Spoon. Ledger woke first, alerting Wickett — who was on the final watch — to the approaching sound of tracking hounds. Before the party could fully rouse themselves, three enormous mastiff-like dogs (each pushing 200 pounds) crashed into the clearing, teeth bared and wearing spiked collars that appeared to be causing them visible pain. One collar bore a softly glowing magical amulet. Initiative was rolled, and the party moved to handle the dogs without killing them.

The encounter was a creative mix of grappling, improvised shield work, and sleight of hand. Wickett rang a bell that briefly halted the dogs' advance — the tone happened to resemble their training master's command signal, buying the party a single round. Wickett then climbed a tree, leapt onto the back of one dog, and with a 21 sleight of hand check deftly unbuckled its spiked collar, earning an enthusiastic face-licking in return. Skrit used his Protection fighting style to impose disadvantage on an attack aimed at Sanji, shielding her with a stolen pot lid — an instinctive act that surprised even him. He then landed a critical non-lethal smite with a meat tenderizer, knocking the alpha dog unconscious before healing it back to consciousness with Lay on Hands and offering it rations. Gorlog successfully grappled the second dog after holding his action and fed it a leg of lamb. Sanji, deeply uncomfortable around dogs throughout the fight, nevertheless removed the third dog's collar with a 22 sleight of hand check — and then immediately disengaged. She also stomped the glowing tracking amulet to pieces, destroying it.

Once all three collars were off and the dogs were fed, the aggression drained out of them entirely. Scrit identified the amulet as a tracking device — able to reveal location to a remote scryer on demand — and confirmed that its destruction prevented further magical tracking. Examining the collar hardware, Wickett spotted ornate engraved initials: CBP. Constable Barnaby Plum's dogs. Wickett tied a handwritten note to a loose rope collar on the last departing dog, its contents kept secret from the party (and the audience), grinning to himself. The dogs trotted off into the forest in a different direction than they had come, apparently native to the woods and unconcerned about the party now that their task was done. Gorlog named one of them Meatball, and the farewell was genuinely emotional — particularly for Scrit.

With the dogs gone and the tracker destroyed, the party broke camp and hit the road. The journey to Waymoot provided the first real opportunity for the crew to talk. Gorlog revealed he used to push a single broken-wheeled cart before Wickett joined and helped him build up the operation. Wickett said he was just roaming, found himself useful, and asked for a job. Sanji explained she came from a monastery in the mountains and left to explore — for fun, not as a job. Skrit shared that he was simply looking for food in the market when the chaos in Splinter's Bend swept him up, and noted that kobolds are generally not treated well. The session closed with the Greasy Spoon rolling through the heavy timber gates of Waymoot, Ledger's narration framing the moment — hungry loggers on the other side, the party still fugitives, and breakfast service about to begin.

Player Decisions

Wickett Turnheel Carson

Rang a bell to distract the incoming hounds on his first turn.

Three large tracking mastiffs burst into the clearing. Wickett had just woken from the final watch and needed to act.

Consequence

The bell tone resembled the dogs' training master's command signal, halting their advance for one round — an unlikely success that bought the party critical time.

Wickett Turnheel Carson

Climbed a tree to 15 feet, then dropped to 5 feet and leapt onto dog three's back to remove its collar.

The DM ruled that collars could not be removed from a free dog; grappling or mounting was required first.

Consequence

Succeeded on an acrobatics check (11) to mount, then removed the collar with a 21 sleight of hand check. Took 1 piercing damage from the spiked collar. The dog immediately became friendly and licked him.

Wickett Turnheel Carson

Retrieved aged tuna from the cart and hand-fed it to dog three.

Dog three had its collar removed but was not yet fully satiated or calm.

Consequence

The dog immediately lay down and ate contentedly, fully pacified.

Wickett Turnheel Carson

Wrote a note and attached it via a loose rope collar to the last departing dog.

After recognizing the CBP initials on the collar hardware as Constable Barnaby Plum's, Wickett retrieved his ledger, scribbled something, and fixed the note to the dog before it left.

Consequence

Unknown. Contents of the note were kept secret from the other players. The note will travel back toward Barnaby with the dog.

Skrit Kyle

Used Protection fighting style reaction to impose disadvantage on the dog's attack against Sanji.

Sanji backed away from dog one and the dog moved to attack her. Skrit instinctively interposed with his pot lid shield.

Consequence

The attack missed. Skrit was left with his arm nearly inside the dog's mouth, terrified by his own reflexive action.

Skrit Kyle

Attempted a non-lethal critical smite with a meat tenderizer on the alpha dog.

Dog one had attacked Skrit twice and was fixated on him. Skrit was bothered by the dog's pain and servitude but could not remove the collar non-lethally with the dog free.

Consequence

26 points of non-lethal damage — well above the threshold. Dog knocked unconscious with 1 HP remaining. Skrit then healed it with 10 points of Lay on Hands and offered it rations.

Sanji Kait

Removed dog two's collar while Gorlog held it grappled, then immediately disengaged.

Gorlog had successfully grappled dog two, providing the stable target needed for a collar removal attempt.

Consequence

Succeeded with a 22 sleight of hand check. The dog became noticeably less aggressive toward her specifically. She disengaged before it could lick her.

Sanji Kait

Stomped the magical tracking amulet from dog one's collar to destroy it.

After the encounter ended, Sanji retrieved the collar Skrit had removed and examined it, noting the glowing amulet.

Consequence

The amulet shattered, glowed three times, and went dark. Skrit confirmed this meant it could no longer be used to remotely locate the party.

Gorlog (Tiny) Bobby

Held an action to attempt to grapple an approaching dog, framed in-character as trying to hug it.

Dog two advanced and attempted to bite Gorlog. Gorlog had been attempting a friendly approach and held the grapple action as a trigger.

Consequence

The bite attempt triggered the held grapple. Gorlog succeeded on the athletics contest (beat the dog's roll of 9). The dog was grappled. A subsequent attempt to remove the collar while grappling failed (rolled 11, DC not met).

Memorable Quotes

Ledger (closing narration): 'Most folks being hunted by the law would have just put those tracking hounds in the dirt, kept riding. Not these soft hearts.'
Gorlog: 'I got licked about four hours ago.' (in response to Sanji asking when he last had a bath)
Sanji: 'Exploring, not job, for fun.'

Cliffhangers

  • The contents of the note Wickett attached to the departing dog are unknown to the other players and the audience.
  • The dogs will return to Constable Barnaby Plum, confirming the party's last known location in the King's Forest and the destruction of his tracking amulet.
  • The party has just arrived at the gates of Waymoot with hungry loggers inside and a bounty implied on their heads — first service in a new town is about to begin.

Plot Threads This Session

advanced Fugitives from Splinter's Bend

Constable Barnaby Plum's tracking hounds located the camp at pre-dawn, confirming he is actively hunting the party. The party neutralized the dogs non-lethally, removed and destroyed the magical tracking amulet (CBP-engraved), and moved on. Wickett attached a handwritten note to the last departing dog — contents unknown. The amulet's destruction means Barnaby can no longer magically locate the party via that method, but the dogs' return to him will confirm the party's last known general area.

resolved The Road to Waymoot

The party arrived at the gates of Waymoot by approximately 8:30 AM, completing their overnight journey. The tracker amulet was destroyed before arrival, reducing the risk of being followed directly into town.

advanced Skrit Joins the Crew

Skrit contributed significantly in the hound encounter, protecting Sanji with improvised shield work and non-lethally subduing the alpha dog before healing it. During the road conversation he shared that he was a full-grown kobold who had been in the Splinter's Bend market looking for food when the chaos caught him. He described being generally picked on, in part due to his species.

advanced Sanji Joins the Crew

Sanji participated in the encounter despite a strong aversion to dogs, removing a collar and destroying the amulet. During the travel conversation, she revealed she came from a mountain monastery, earned her monk title through training and a secret trial, and left purely out of curiosity — exploration as fun, not job. She is only a couple months out in the wider world and has limited exposure to many common creatures and concepts.
